Grandmama's Cafe

Had heard a lot about this café so when opportunity presented itself on a wet Sunday morning grabbed it with both hands and arrived with bag baggage (read husband and children) for breakfast. Luckily by the time we reached there it was sunny. FYI, there is a charge of INR 150 for parking on the weekends inside the Kamala Mills compound, on weekdays apparently its free. May be the restaurant can reimburse that if the bill exceeds a certain amount. Something for them to think about.

Anyway, the first thing I noticed was the size of this place. Lately most of the cafes that I have been to in the suburbs have been size ‘S’, this was size ‘XL’, which is my kind of size. So, loved that about the place along with the green painted doors and windows dressed in delicate lace curtains covering their top part leaving enough space for the sunlight to stream in, it reminded me of the restaurants and homes I saw in Austria. The feel of the place was warm, friendly and inviting. The other thing I liked about this café was that it opens at 9 am as opposed to others that open at 11am or 12 noon or even later.

The food was equally good. We had akuri on toast, baked beans on toast, homemade waffles with nutella, eggs florentine, mashed potatoes, hash browns and bacon.

The akuri and baked beans were what you would expect - good, the waffles were very good - warm and fluffy. The presentation was simple and uncluttered and just right for breakfast.

Eggs Florentine was ok, the eggs were a tad bit overdone and hence not oozing when I cut into them and the dish was slightly bland according to my Indian masala palate and I would have preferred it with slightly thinner and crispier bread. But having said that it still had it's appeal.

The mashed potato was really good, so many places don’t get it right but here it was perfect, not too creamy, the right kind of fluffy and with just the right amount of seasoning. It was a hit with the kids. The hash browns were great too - not too oily - the only complaint being in a plate they served only 2 whereas a minimum of 4 should be served (or so me thinks). The bacon was crispy. So all in all a good breakfast.

The drinks we had were fresh orange juice which was nice and fresh – they have a policy of no ice and no sugar so if you want either or both please let the server know – cold coffee and a chocolate milk shake. All were good.

Will definitely head back there at the next opportunity and try a few more things as their menu is pretty extensive.
